Large deposits of variegated clay mineral types abound in most parts of the State. The volume of this mineral is such that about 55% of the entire land mass of Delta State is Clay. Only a minor percentage of this resource however is presently being utilized. Clay mineral is a group of important hydrous aluminum that contains significant amounts of iron, alkali, metal and or alkaline earths.
It is useful for drilling in petroleum extraction and as catalyst in petroleum refining and as a decolorizing agent in the processing of minerals and vegetable oils. Other industrial purposes for which the mineral can be used include the manufacture of Refectory products, Insulators, Pottery, Brick, Paving stones and Slabs, drainage and sewage pipes amongst others.
